From October 2016, Skype will be dropping support for older versions of Android OS, iOS and Windows Phone operating systems. Specifically, the following platform versions will be dropped:
- Android OS 4.0.2 and below
- Older versions of iOS below iOS 8
- Windows Phone 8.1 and below
The Skype team say this drop in support for older operating systems is because they have a transition from a peer-to-peer based architecture to a cloud based one. This transition has led to the introduction of new features such as video calling and improved account security to the most recent versions of Skype.
If you use Skype on a smartphone running any of the older software listed above, be sure to upgrade your devices before October 2016 to be able to continue to use Skype for mobile.
