IAUE To Commence IT Academy Programme With Microsoft Corporation
Microsoft is the world’s leading producer of computer software and one of the most formidable and influential providers of information technology.
It was founded April 4, 1975 by Bill Gates and Paul Allen in Albuquergue New Mexico. Some of its best selling products include the Microsoft windows operating system, Microsoft office suite of productivity software and many other software services, devices and solutions.
Microsoftsoft Corportation has indicated interest to partner with Ignatius Ajuru University of Education to improve and strengthen the educational programmes of the university.
Microsoft Consumer Channels Group Director Mr. Mark Ihimoyan gave this indication when he paid a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education Professor Joseph Kinanee at his office on Wednesday 23rd March 2016.
Mr Ihimoyan who pointed out that Microsoft has moved from archaic technology to cutting edge system through its incessant innovations remarked that the 21st century modern day students needs to be creative and relevant as a professional. The educational and learning experiences he continued would be transformed with innovations and made interesting to help empower, develop skills and create a sustained economic opportunities for the students.
The Microsoft Director who noted that IAUE was blessed to have a visionary leader like Professor Joseph Kinanee, stressed that they were ready to start the IT Academy programme with Microsoft certification and make IAUE a bench mark for a global standard that can be referenced.
Responding the Vice-Chancellor Professor Joseph Kinanee noted that the university had gotten computers and software from Microsoft before now. He emphasized that the dream of State Government was to ensure that IAUE trained students in B.Sc. Ed and B. Sc Computer Science.
The Vice-Chancellor hinted that although the university was one of education it would diversify and welcomed the proposal for Microsoft personnel to train IAUE Staff in modern technology. He also said that IAUE would gladly partner with Microsoft in its effort to support the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) as well as maintain it adding that maintenance culture was key if much was to be achieved.
Professor Kinanee informed the Director that IAUE was preparing for accreditation by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and needed e-library in each department. He solicited for support to ensure that the programmes of the university attained full accreditation.
Also speaking the university librarian Dr. Boma Obi observed that the university e-library was functional and not a check list. She called for effective training at the barest minimum cost as staff would be interested in their training which she noted must not necessarily be self based. Dr. Obi opined that some staff were immigrants to the ICT world and needed personal training

Fed Poly Ede ASUP Strike Action And The Injustice Against Students
When two elephants are in a tug of war, the grass they say
are those that will suffer for it, Which brings about the
commencement of an industrial action between the Non-
academic staff union and the School management of
Federal Polytechnic Ede Osun State.
This strike which today marks the 8th day of its kickoff has
been a serious concern to all the students most especially
the stalites (some stated their exams a day before the strike
started) in the institution.
Now, two heads/elephants are in a serious disagreement,
the students who knows nothing about what could have
prompted the disagreement are the victim who suffers for
the cause and are being kept at home doing nothing. The
management is also happy to waste the students' time
because they know they can't do anything.
The major concern of the students are those who have
spent 4 years obtaining Ordinary National Diploma and
those who have spent 3 good years just to obtain their
Higher National Diploma (HND) could not have the courage
to face either of them because they don't want to spend
another extra year which the management threatened to
give them if they raise any alarm about it.
Recently a student posted an article on Facebook page of
the institution, the article caught the attention of the
management and they ordered for the arrest of the student
and was detained in the police custody for more than 24hrs
just because the student expressed his mind concerning
what was going on in the institution.
The school management increased the School fees, some
students went for a peaceful protest just to know the reason
why the fees was increased they were all beaten by the
security and sent back home of which we were all forced to
pay the increased fees.
Another issue occurred of which #5000 was added for
students who failed to pay their school fees on time and
those who could not complete their registration on time. The
student also went for a peaceful protest just for the school
to reduce the amount but all their peaceful effort landed
some of them in police custody
All these were happening before the strike commenced, of
which during the strike, precisely last week, the chairman of
the school management was summoned by the EFCC
officials and he denied everything saying he didn't increase
the sch fees neither did he added #5000 for the late
registration
The reason for this ongoing strike by the NASU was because
of the CONTISS 15 arrears the federal government promised
all federal polytechnics to give them of which the lecturers
in the institution could testify that their colleagues in other
institutions had received theirs but federal polytechnic Ede
management failed to implement that on their own salary
instead they are been paid half of their salary since January
up till this moment.
After the collection of the late registration fee of #5000, they
were all expectant that the implementation would start but
to their amazement, nothing of such pop up so they decided
to start the strike.
I believe all these are happening because there is no
Student Union Government (SUG) in the institution and the
School management is not ready to reinstate the union
because they are scared that they would not have a say
anytime they try to trample on our interest just to fulfill their
own selfish interest We now come to realize that with all
this waste of time, if we eventually graduate at last, we
won't be relevant in the labour market again having issues
with age barrier.
Please on behalf of the students of Federal Polytechnic Ede
Osun State I humbly call for the intervention of the federal
government and all other educational parastatals to please
save us from what we can call slavery.
Anytime we are pushed to talk we will either be arrested or
been threatened to be expelled and everyone of us is afraid
of spending an extra year when all our mates are already in
service, some have even started working.
All the students are ready to support and follow up with the
federal government and be at your call for any verification
about what is going on in the institution.
On this note, We call on the federal government to please
help us look into the man's (rector precisely) case and
check how he has managed to make money from our
school fees (both from daily part time students and regular
part time students), the stress of our parents and some of
us who work to sponsor ourselves in school, yet at the
detriment of our glorious future, do what he likes to delay
our precious time
We also want the SUG to be back so we can be able to relay
our mind to the school and other federal bodies
Thanks
Check Out The Top 15 Most Choosen Courses In Nigerian Universities
The third and the highest level of tertiary education in Nigeria is the University.
There are presently 124 universities with Federal and State government controlling 37 each while the Private sector controls 50. Applicants have over 570 courses to choose from each categorized into Faculties.
There are some courses that have enjoyed consistent preference; I have used both Applicants’ choices in both JAMB 2013, 2014 and 2015 to show some of these courses. These obviously would help those still in Secondary schools and future JAMB applicants know how competitive a course is before finally locking their choice down on it.
From my findings; Medicine & Surgery is the most sought-after course in the whole of Nigeria universities.
Also, out of the whole 124 universities; only 35 offer Medicine & Surgery, 16 Federal, 14 State and 4 Private universities respectively.
Other top 15 courses are
1) Accounting
2) Economics
3) Business administration
4) Mass Communication(CLA)
5) Computer Science
6) Law
7) Political Science
8) Microbiology
9) Biochemistry

UNILORIN IOE Director Calls for Support of JAMB CBT
“Let them open up what has happened and then that is what we call system analysis, then we come back to system synthesis. And I am sure the body will be fortified and will provide better services than what has happened before.”
“JAMB should call stakeholders, the IT officers and other experts in the area of Information Technology from outside the establishment and universities”
The Director, Institute of Education (IOE), University of Ilorin, Prof. Mudashiru Yusuf, has called on Nigerians to support the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to improve on the conduct of its computer-based Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) instead of seeking to revert to the manual system of pencil and paper test.
The Professor of Educational Technology stated this in an interview with Unilorin Bulletin last Tuesday (March 22, 2016), saying that in this digital age, the transition to computer-based examinations was inevitable in order to compete effectively in a globalised environment.
While noting that the hitches experienced during the conduct of the 2016 UTME were teething problems, which would be overcome, Prof. Yusuf said it was retrogressive to ask JAMB to go back to conducting manual examinations.
He said, “To advise a mother to stop child bearing simply because a child has teething problem, is a wrong approach”, adding that “as at today, in Nigeria, we are not only ready we should be ready whether we like it or not. These our children will not compete with somebody in Ilorin alone; they will compete with somebody even in Britain for the next generation of jobs. They are going to compete with not just somebody in Nigeria; that is why jobs are being internationalised.”
“You are asking investors to come into Nigeria; if they come into Nigeria and they establish industries and they know the workforce you have will not be able to sustain their industries, they will have to import their workforce. It is when you are able and capable that they will employ you. Let us not deceive ourselves; this is a digital age and information age. It is like saying: are we ready for the use of digital-based banking? The answer is obvious.”
According to Prof. Yusuf, going fully digital will eliminate fraudulent practices in the system.
He said, “Nigeria is ready and we should go digital. I don’t know what has happened, JAMB has tried before now. I hope it is not sabotage by some individuals. Nigerians have a way of doing certain things; once they know something does not favour them, they want to by-pass it and destroy it”.
Pointing out that “Change is a natural thing”, Prof. Yusuf said, “If people are asking JAMB to go back to manual-based examination, it is retrogressive. They should be asking JAMB, you did this thing, there was a problem; how is it that you are going to ensure that next time the problem does not reoccur that is what we should be doing …”
While commending JAMB for allowing for remediation where lapses have occurred, the IOE Director explained that in everything human, there is bound to be error.
Prof. Yusuf, however, enjoined the examination body to “go beyond its in-house IT officers”.
According to him, “JAMB should call stakeholders, the IT officers and other experts in the area of Information Technology from outside the establishment and universities”, adding that the University of Ilorin, which is a pioneering institution in the area of computer-based test, and others who have established themselves in that area should be invited to be part of the JAMB team as well as experts in tests and measurements, for a brainstorming session. “Let them open up what has happened and then that is what we call system analysis, then we come back to system synthesis. And I am sure the body will be fortified and will provide better services than what has happened before.”
Akwa-Ibom Ex-Deputy Governor Donates CBT Centres to JAMB
The former Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Dr. Christopher Stephen Ekpenyong, has donated a computer-based Gestric Information Technology and Management Institute (GITMI) at Ikot Ekpene and Uyo.
Speaking in an interview in Uyo, the state capital, Obong Ekpenyong, the Proprietor of the institute, said that the computer- based Gestric Information Technology and Management Institute (GITMI) he established, accommodated over 10,000 candidates, who participated in the just concluded Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) Computer-Based-Test (CBT) conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
He also commended JAMB for its foresight in approving the school as one of its CBT centres in the state.

JAMB CBT Has Come To Stay,There's No Going Back - FG
The Federal Government has stated that the JAMB CBT has
come to stay and there is no going back on that.
This was disclosed by the Minister of State for Education,
Professor Anthony Anwuka.
According to him, "The Computer Based Tests have been
institutionalised by JAMB and there is no going back on this
policy. Computer literacy is now in vogue all over the world
and anybody that decides to deny himself this competency,
has himself to blame".
Concerning the recent protest by some candidates over the
CBT examination policy, the Minister said: "If a student, who
goes out there and fails the CBT examination, decides to
carry placard against JAMB instead of making concerted
effort to be computer literate, that is his business".

All you Need to Know About Nursing School before you Apply
Did you know that there are three (3) routes to becoming a
registered nurse and/or midwife in Nigeria.
1) The 3 year Basic General Nursing Programme
2) The 3 year Basic Midwifery Training Programme and
3) The 5 year Generic BNSc Nursing Programme
The cool thing is that these 3 routes share the same entry
requirements of Credits in five subjects (English language,
Maths, Biology, Physics and Chemistry in not more than 2
sittings). The only difference is the JAMB requirement for the
BNSc programme, meaning you have a choice to either go
pick up a form for either the basic nursing/ basic midwifery
program or go the extra mile and sit for JAMB for the BNSc
Program.
The 5 year Generic BNSc Nursing Programme
The 5 year BNSc program is designed to make you a
polyvalent nurse practitioner at the end of which you
graduate with the General Nursing program qualification
(RN), the Midwifery program qualification (RM) and a
Bachelors degree in Nursing (BNSc). Most institution now
put an icing on the cake with an extra qualification in Public
health Nursing. Isn't that cool?. Oh, i forgot to add that with
this qualification, you can seamlessly move on to get your
masters degree in Nursing and then a Ph.D in Nursing.
The 3 year Basic Midwifery Training Programme
An obvious major draw-back to the 3 year basic midwifery
route is the fact that even after qualifying as a Registered
Midwife, most recruiting organizations would always request
for a double qualified practitioner, thus you still have to go
back for another 18 months post basic general nursing
course. The fact that most universities do NOT accept RM
qualification for direct entry purposes is another huge
challenge.
The 3 year Basic General Nursing Programme
For the basic general nursing programme, you'll need to
cough up an average of N250,000 to N300, 000 for
admission fees first of all. You should also know that the 3
year duration isn't inclusive of the 6 months that you would
spend in PTS. This 3 years can within the blink of an eye
extend to 4, 5 years in different guises such as demotion,
pregnancy, flimsy suspensions by our almighty SON
principals, indexing wahala, exceeded admission quota by
schools, accreditation issues, failure in either of the NMCN
Qualifying exams or Hospital finals etc. The list is endless.
Even after writing the NMCN exams, you still get to spend
some extra months working in the wards for "free" in the
training hospital pending when council releases your final
qualifying result. I probably missed out how you cant
immediately apply for Direct entry or go for a post basic
course as there is no definite timeline as to when the council
would release your license and/or notification. Academic
sessions and job opportunities fly by while you wait
endlessly on the council.
An important fact you should know is that the general
nursing and basic midwifery routes are both hospital based
programs with professional licensure and it was only in
october of 2007 that an expert assessors committee
accorded the qualifications obtained therein the same as
HND attracting a grade level08 (step 1) for employment
purposes only and NOT for academic purposes.
A major advantage though, of obtaining an RN qualification
either via route 1,2 or 3 is that it qualifies you to practice as
a nurse abroad. RN qualification is also a valid requirement
for further studies in the Nigerian university system for
direct entry (DE) into degree programs in philosophy,
psychology, social works etc.
The major draw back here is that the profession at the
moment is embroiled in a bitter fight for the soul of Nursing
professionalism. Earning a degree in these previously and
erroneously tagged "degrees allied to Nursing" according to
our statutory regulatory body NMCN does not qualify one to
progress to the directorate Nursing cadre. This stance by the
NMCN reinforced the position of the National council on
establishment (NCE) at its 37th Meeting in Akure where it
stated that "Possession of a first degree in NURSING, not
alllied courses is a sine qua non of running the nursing
officers cadre.
LUTH management also reaffirmed this when it refused
accepting Masters degrees in these "allied course" obtained
by lecturers in its school of Midwifery insisting that
professional progression must be dependent on acquisition
of masters degree in core Nursing courses for holders of
BNSc qualification, not masters in an allied course. Thus the
route may provide an avenue for further degrees in other
professional domains but these degrees outside of Nursing
may count for nothing professionally.
On the long run, the abysmal remuneration of being a
singled qualified (RN) nurse would force you to seek further
post basic qualification which costs an average of another
N250,000 to N300,000 in admission costs. I forgot to add
that most post basic programs would insist that you should
have practiced for at least 2 years before applying; a two
year experience you would gain trolling from one private
hospital to another where you would be overworked and
underpaid.
Remember, this post basic qualification is a prerequisite if
you would want to be employed on GL 08 step 4 instead of
step 1 if you had only an RN. What this means is that you
may never get to the peak as your professional growth
terminates abruptly at grade level 14 and you can only go
beyond this on lateral conversion to the officers cadre
following acquisition of a Nursing degree
By this time, six years or more would have rolled by. You
probably have gotten married with kids and wishing you
went with route 3 (BNSc Nursing). Albeit late, you decide to
start the 4 year university route. If financially buoyant, you
probably enroll in a neighboring country like benin republic,
ghana, niger for a BNSc program or you spend another two
years battling to get a DE admission to a Nigerian university.
Adult education at this time puts your marriage under strain,
your life is put at risk as you make multiple treacherous
travels to the university, the emotional and psychological
torture cannot be quantified not to talk of the financial
burden of university admission. The entire rigmarole is just
time wasting, psychologically demeaning and heart
wrenching.
Globally, the system of education in nursing is changing. I
sincerely hope that this article on NursingworldNigeria.com
enlightens you to make an informed decision on which route
suits you best. I wish you best of luck.
