So much stress??..Foods that can relief you In a blink of an eye!

10 Best Foods to Eat for Stress

Had a long day at the office? Kids acting out all day? Feeling a financial crunch or relationship strain? Grab your fork and dig in to the following stress-busting superfoods.4

1. Green Leafy Vegetables

Dark leafy greens like spinach are rich in folate, which helps your body produce mood-regulating neurotransmitters, including serotonin and dopamine. One 2012 study found people who consumed the most folate had a lower risk of depression than those who ate the least.5

Not to mention, research from the University of Otago found eating fruits and vegetables of any sort (except fruit juice and dried fruit) helped young adults calm their nerves.6 Department of Psychology researcher Dr. Tamlin Conner said:7

"On days when people ate more fruits and vegetables, they reported feeling calmer, happier, and more energetic than they normally did."

2. Organic Turkey Breast

Turkey is a good source of tryptophan, an amino acid (protein building block) that your body converts into serotonin. Research shows that argumentative people who consumed tryptophan become markedly more pleasant, with researchers noting:8

"Tryptophan significantly decreased quarrelsome behaviors and increased agreeable behaviors and perceptions of agreeableness."

Pumpkin seeds, nuts, and free-range organic eggs are also rich sources of tryptophan.

3. Fermented Foods

The secret to improving your mental health is in your gut, as unhealthy gut flora can have a detrimental impact your brain health, leading to issues like anxiety and depression. Beneficial bacteria have a direct effect on brain chemistry, transmitting mood- and behavior-regulating signals to your brain via your vagus nerve.

4. Wild-Caught Alaskan Salmon

Found in salmon, sardines, and anchovies, or supplement form, such as krill oil, the animal-based omega-3 fats EPA and DHA play a role in your emotional well-being. There are a number of vendors, like Vital Choice, that have documented radiation free salmon.

One study in Brain Behavior and Immunity showed a dramatic 20 percent reduction in anxiety among medical students taking omega-3,11 while past research has shown omega-3 fats work just as well as antidepressants in preventing the signs of depression, but without any of the side effects.

5. Blueberries

Anthocyanins are the pigments that give berries like blueberries and blackberries their deep color. These antioxidants aid your brain in the production of dopamine, a chemical that is critical to coordination, memory function, and your mood. Also, as TIME reported:12

"Research has also shown that blueberry eaters experience a boost in natural killer cells, 'a type of white blood cell that plays a vital role in immunity, critical for countering stress,' says Cynthia Sass, MPH, RD, Health's contributing nutrition editor."

6. Pistachios

One study found eating two servings of pistachios a day lowered vascular constriction during stress, which means the load on your heart is reduced since your arteries are more dilated.13 Not to mention, you might find the rhythmic act of shelling pistachios therapeutic, as doing a repetitive activity can help quiet racing thoughts in your head.

Pistachios are at high risk of contamination by a carcinogenic mold called aflatoxin and may be bleached or fumigated during processing; choose organic pistachios and avoid those that are dyed, bleached, or show signs of decay.

7. Dark Chocolate

If you're one of these individuals who gets a nice mood boost whenever you sink your teeth into a bar of pure, unadulterated chocolate, it is not happenstance. There's a chemical reason behind it called anandamide, a neurotransmitter produced in the brain that temporarily blocks feelings of pain and depression. It's a derivative of the Sanskrit word "bliss," and one of the great things about chocolate is that it not only produces this compound, it also contains other chemicals that prolong the "feel-good" aspects of anandamide.

Chocolate has even been referred to as "the new anti-anxiety drug." One study in the Journal of Psychopharmacology also revealed that drinking an antioxidant-rich chocolate drink equal to about 1.5 ounces of dark chocolate daily felt calmer than those who did not.14

8. Sunshine

It's not technically a food, but a daily dose of sunshine might help stabilize your mood. Serotonin, the brain hormone associated with mood elevation, rises with exposure to bright light and falls with decreased sun exposure. In 2006, scientists evaluated the effects of vitamin D on the mental health of 80 elderly patients and found those with the lowest levels of vitamin D were 11 times more prone to be depressed than those who received healthy doses.15

Low vitamin D levels are also associated with an increased risk of panic disorders.16 While you can get some vitamin D in foods like salmon, egg yolks, and mushrooms, your best solution for optimizing your levels is through sensible sun exposure.

9. Seeds

Magnesium, which acts as a precursor for neurotransmitters like serotonin, is well-known for its role in helping to regulate your emotions and enhance well-being. Dr. Carolyn Dean, a medical and naturopathic doctor, has studied and written about magnesium for more than 15 years. The latest edition of her book, The Magnesium Miracle, details 22 medical areas that magnesium deficiency triggers, including anxiety, panic attacks, and depression.

Seaweed and green leafy vegetables like spinach and Swiss chard can be excellent sources of magnesium, as are some beans, nuts, and seeds, like pumpkin, sunflower, and sesame seeds. Avocados also contain magnesium. Juicing your vegetables is an excellent option to ensure you're getting enough of them in your diet.

10. Avocado

Avocados provide close to 20 essential health-boosting nutrients, including potassium, vitamin E, B vitamins, and folate, and, according to research published in the Nutrition Journal, eating just one-half of a fresh avocado with lunch may satiate you if you're overweight, which will help prevent unnecessary snacking later.17

Those who ate half an avocado with their standard lunch reported being 40 percent less hungry three hours after their meal, and 28 percent less hungry at the five-hour mark compared to those who did not eat avocado for lunch. The study also found that avocados appear helpful for regulating blood sugar levels. This combination of satiety and blood-sugar regulation can help keep your mood steady, even in times of stress.

Do you prepare for winter illness???.…Is necessary for your health!

It's a hot, lovely summer, here in SoCal; hard to even think about winter time right now.  But, this is a good time to start to think and plan ahead for what remedies you would like to have on hand to be prepared for the winter colds and flu bugs.

Herbs are such gentle healers and are easy to prepare and use.  Our bodies are complex and have many needs, and this is often met by the complexity of herbs.  There is a time and place for antibiotics, but did you know that in most clinical outpatient settings, antibiotics are rarely needed?  I am concerned by the trend I have seen when I was a practicing nurse and what I observe in the general public now, of taking an antibiotic almost anytime a cold or flu comes around.

While popping a pill may seem like the quick and easy method of dealing with an illness, more and more evidence is showing the damaging effects of antibiotics, especially on gut health.  This is critical information, as our gut holds 80% of our immune system.  Diseases like Crohn's and irritable bowel, often stemming from gut damage, are on the rise and antibiotic resistant bugs are multiplying.

If we are not careful about working to decrease the use of antibiotics, we will soon have no antibiotics left to use.  I have personally witnessed antibiotic resistance bacteria as a nurse, and it is scary.  I find it very sad, that our continued over use of antibiotics could leave our children the heritage of no antibiotics.

All that being said, what are some things that can be used to help fight off colds and flu bugs?

1)  I love to have elderberry syrup on hand.  I give it to our family the day before, day of, and day after we are in public places during the winter season.  For an active cold and flu, this can be taken a few times a day.  Mountain Rose Herbs, (where I buy most of my herbal supplies),  has a lovely syrup recipe you can find HERE.  Be sure to buy your berries now or within a month or two, as these are becoming more and more popular and will be difficult to come by in the winter time.  If you are using raw honey, do not give to children under 2.

2) Fermented Cod Liver Oil is another stand by in our home.  We take less during the spring and summer months, but in the fall and winter, this is a daily must have.  You can find this product at Green Pastures.  This is a superior form of cod liver oil and we notice a difference when we consistently take this product.

3) Two herbs I always have on hand that are helpful for fever support are yarrow and elder flowers.  For very young children, starting at the age of one, Herbs for Kids, as has a great remedy called Temp Assure that can be found HERE, that contains these herbs and is a good support to take when a child is feverish.  Though this is a topic that could be a post in and of itself, low grade fevers should not be lowered, but rather give herbs to support the body during this process, as it is the body's way of killing off bacteria and viruses.  It is high grade fevers that will need to be lowered to protect the body.

4) Raw honey and cinnamon are a

great combination that has been known to help get rid of a cold if taken at the first sign of symptoms.  If you are using this for children, be sure to use "sweet" cinnamon also know as true cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum).  Most cinnamon found in stores is cassia cinnamon and not tolerated well by children.  You can find true cinnamon, HERE, and a recipe HERE.  Do not give raw honey to children under the age of two.

5) Reduce your sugar intake, as sugar kills the immune system.

6) Get some good probiotics, either buying them, or making your own.  You can try your hand at water kefir or kombucha for some yummy probiotic drinks.  If you are buying, I recommend Udo's, especially for children.  Summer is a great time to learn how to make either one of these drinks.
Making fermented vegetables is another way to get probiotics and build the immune system.  Here are two recipes to get you started:  Spiced Cultured Carrots and Sauerkraut.

7)  Dried sage tea is another fabulous remedy for those nasty colds.  Stir in a spoonful of raw honey for a delicious treat.  (Breastfeeding moms should not use this, though, as sage can dry up milk supply).

8) Eucalyptus essential oil is a great oil to have on hand for inhalation and can be inhaled out of the bottle, placed on a cotton ball, or in a carrier oil.  Eucalyptus globulus is the most common one sold, but it is best not to use this one on children, rather, use Eucalyptus radiata.  HERE is a recipe for a sinus rub that I make up for cold and flu season.

9) A fun drink you can give your kids is Garlic Lemonade or "Citrus-Aide".  Here is the recipe.

These are just a few simple ideas to help you as you prepare for cold and flu season.  Spread the word that there are alternatives to antibiotics and beautiful, gentle ways to heal your body naturally.

A doctor said, diabetes is not related to overeating sugar. A person diagnosed with diabetes when the body does not produce enough insulin or does not use insulin properly there. So, do not correct these diseases arise due to overeating sweets. Under normal circumstances, everyday people need nutrition consisting of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals.

Carbohydrates needed for energy and contain 4 calories per gram. Protein is needed to build up the muscles and tissues, in addition to generating energy. Each gram of protein contains 4 calories. Fat is also needed for energy generation. Each gram produces 9 calories and partly saved for future needs. Carbohydrate derived from sugar and starch are then broken down into glucose in the body. Furthermore by insulin, processed carbohydrates that are acceptable liver (as depot glukogen), muscle, and fat tissue. Most directly used as an energy source.

Diabetes type 2, often not detected at an early stage. As a result, many patients with newly detected diabetes suffer from heart attacks, blindness, amputation, death due to diabetes. With the number of cases reached 90% of all types of diabetes, type 2 diabetes is the most common kind suffered. This type of diabetes occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or the body stops responding to insulin, leading to high levels of glucose in the blood.

There are some things that unwittingly makes a person a higher risk of developing diabetes. If you regularly sleep less than five hours a day, the risk of diabetes doubled compared to those who sleep 7-8 hours every night. Here are some of the causes someone greater at risk of developing diabetes:

1. Apple shape: Waistline widening few kilograms could lead to the risk of diabetes type 2. A woman is at risk if their waist measured more than 80 cm. Asian men at high risk if their waist size of more than 90 cm.

2. Lack of sleep: If someone regularly sleep less than five hours a day, then they are exposed to twice the risk of diabetes than those who sleep 7-8 hours a day. Pregnant women produce extra sugar to help the fetus grow, thereby disrupting normal insulin glucose balance, and generally having a baby with a larger size. Although it will heal by itself after giving birth, women with gestational diabetes have a greater risk than 7 times higher of developing diabetes in the future.

6. Skipping breakfast: Research in Australia found that people who skip breakfast tend to experience a sudden drop in blood sugar in the morning, so that they more often eat sweets. This is what causes blood sugar to rise suddenly and stimulate insulin. As a result, the body's cells are resistant to the effects of the hormone that allows the occurrence of diabetes.

7. Shift work: Work shifts for a long time can increase a person's risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 50%. A recent study at Harvard University found that workers who worked day and night shift system at risk. As well as lack of sleep, shift work affects the body's circadian rhythm disruption.

8. Drinking fruit juice: A study of 70,000 women who drink about 180 ml of fruit juice per day, 18% greater risk of developing diabetes. Natural sugar in fruits is very rapidly absorbed through the stomach, causing an increase in blood sugar levels. However, eating fruit rather than juice because it will slow the absorption of the fiber takes longer to digest.

If you have diabetes, just stay calm and keep update information about foods for diabetics.

In addition, brown rice has a higher fiber content than white rice. The benefits of fiber among which, to interfere with the absorption of sugars in carbohydrates, as well as interfere with the absorption of fat that goes with food so it would be more healthful. Brown rice is healthier due to the higher fiber content.

Brown rice carbohydrate content of about 77.6 grams per 100 grams. While brown rice protein content of about 7.5 grams per 100 grams of material, slightly higher than white rice, 6.8 grams per 100 grams of material. Instead of white rice, brown rice has a higher nutrient content. The most prominent mineral content in brown rice are calcium and phosphorus. Calcium levels in brown rice is 16 mg per 100 grams. Other minerals found in brown rice is selenium, because it contains 39 micrograms per 100 grams of brown rice. To get more information, you can read at brown rice nutrition post.

In some literature says, other nutritional elements contained in brown rice is phosphorus (243 mg per 100 g of material) and selenium. Selenium is a trace element (trace element) which is an essential part of the enzyme glutathione peroxidase. This enzyme acts as a catalyst in the breakdown of peroxide into a bond that is not toxic.

Peroxide can turn into free radicals that can oxidize unsaturated fatty acids in the cell membrane to the membrane damage, cause cancer, and other degenerative diseases. Because of its ability that many experts say brown rice has the potential to prevent cancer and other degenerative diseases.

Moreover the recent publication of the Harvard researchers published in the Archives of Internal Medicine states, brown rice and foodstuffs from whole Cereal is a healthier choice for diabetics, because it raises blood sugar slowly. Knowledge about the benefits of brown rice for diabetes is not new, but until now the white rice is still the favorite of many people. In a study of 200,000 Americans are known, those who ate white rice has diabetes risk 17 percent higher than those who rarely eat rice.

Conversely, people who eat brown rice risk for developing diabetes dropped by 11 percent. The same benefit is also found if we replace white rice with Cereal intact, including bread or pasta. Consumption of food high in fiber succeeded in lowering the risk of diabetes because it can lower blood sugar and insulin levels and reduce the risk of poor progression of glucose tolerance in type 2 diabetes.

Dont live leftover Onions.its Poisonous and Attracts bacteria and its not good for health!

Onions to be used completely or thrown away if not finished"

PLEASE READ TO THE END: IMPORTANT

In 1919 when the flu killed 40 million people there was this Doctor that visited the many farmers to see if he could help them combat the flu...
Many of the farmers and their families had contracted it and many died.

The doctor came upon this one farmer and to his surprise, everyone was very healthy. When the doctor asked what the farmer was doing that was different the wife replied that she had placed an unpeeled onion in a dish in the rooms of the home, (probably only two rooms back then). The doctor couldn't believe it and asked if he could have one of the onions and place it under the microscope. She gave him one and when he did this, he did find the flu virus in the onion. It obviously absorbed the bacteria, therefore, keeping the family healthy.

Now, I heard this story from my hairdresser. She said that several years ago, many of her employees were coming down with the flu, and so were many of her customers. The next year she placed several bowls with onions around in her shop. To her surprise, none of her staff got sick. It must work. Try it and see what happens. We did it last year and we never got the flu.

Now there is a P. S. to this for I sent it to a friend in Oregon who regularly contributes material to me on health issues. She replied with this most interesting experience about onions:

Thanks for the reminder. I don't know about the farmer's story...but, I do know that I contacted pneumonia, and, needless to say, I was very ill... I came across an article that said to cut both ends off an onion put it into an empty jar, and place the jar next to the sick patient at night. It said the onion would be black in the morning from the germs...sure enough it happened just like that...the onion was a mess and I began to feel better.

Another thing I read in the article was that onions and garlic placed around the room saved many from the black plague years ago. They have powerful antibacterial, antiseptic properties.

This is the other note. Lots of times when we have stomach problems we don't know what to blame. Maybe it's the onions that are to blame. Onions absorb bacteria is the reason they are so good at preventing us from getting colds and flu and is the very reason we shouldn't eat an onion that has been sitting for a time after it has been cut open.

LEFT OVER ONIONS ARE POISONOUS

I had the wonderful privilege of touring Mullins Food Products, Makers of mayonnaise. Questions about food poisoning came up, and I wanted to share what I learned from a chemist.

Ed, who was our tour guide, is a food chemistry whiz. During the tour, someone asked if we really needed to worry about mayonnaise. People are always worried that mayonnaise will spoil. Ed's answer will surprise you. Ed said that all commercially-made mayo is completely safe.

"It doesn't even have to be refrigerated. No harm in refrigerating it, but it's not really necessary." He explained that the pH in mayonnaise is set at a point that bacteria could not survive in that environment. He then talked about the summer picnic, with the bowl of potato salad sitting on the table, and how everyone blames the mayonnaise when someone gets sick.

Ed says that, when food poisoning is reported, the first thing the officials look for is when the 'victim' last ate ONIONS and where those onions came from (in the potato salad?). Ed says it's not the mayonnaise (as long as it's not homemade mayo) that spoils in the outdoors. It's probably the ONIONS, and if not the onions, it's the POTATOES.

He explained onions are a huge magnet for bacteria, especially uncooked onions. You should never plan to keep a portion of a sliced onion.. He says it's not even safe if you put it in a zip-lock bag and put it in your refrigerator.

It's already contaminated enough just by being cut open and out for a bit, that it can be a danger to you (and doubly watch out for those onions you put in your hotdogs at the baseball park!). Ed says if you take the leftover onion and cook it like crazy you'll probably be okay, but if you slice that leftover onion and put on your sandwich, you're asking for trouble. Both the onions and the moist potato in a potato salad, will attract and grow bacteria faster than any commercial mayonnaise will even begin to break down.

Also, dogs should never eat onions. Their stomachs cannot metabolize onions.

Please remember it is dangerous to cut an onion and try to use it to cook the next day, it becomes highly poisonous for even a single night and creates toxic bacteria which may cause adverse stomach infections because of excess bile secretions and even food poisoning.

Please pass this on to all you love and care about.

Having Cold and flu during this harmattan period?? Your Health blog is here!

There are two herbal formulas that have been used for centuries in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to prevent colds, flus and other viral and bacterial infections.  One formula, Jade Screen (Yu Ping Feng San), is best taken preemptively on a daily basis for a month or two near the beginning of cold & flu season, as well as during times of higher stress.  The other, Lonicera & Forsythia Formula (Yin Qiao San), is taken at the very first signs of cold or flu.  If taken early enough, it can often prevent the full expression of the flu or cold.

1. Jade Screen Formula (Yu Ping Feng San)

Overview:  This is a very simple formula containing only 3 herbs, astragalus (huang qi), atractylodes (bai zhu) and siler (fang feng).   From a TCM perspective it supplements the qi and secures the exterior, which in biomedical terms means it has adaptogenic and immune system strengthening effects.  The majority of the formula is comprised of astragalus, with atractylodes and siler supporting and balancing its actions, and it is the astragalus that has been most thoroughly researched for its immune system activating and anti-viral effects.

Form:  The formula can be taken in either granule or tablet form.  The granule form is less expensive and allows me to modify the formula to meet your specific needs.  The down side is that some people have a harder time remembering to take the granule form, as it must be stirred into warm water to drink.  The tablets are slightly more convenient, but the formula can’t be modified, and it is more expensive.

Instructions/Dosage:  This formula should be taken for a month or two near the beginning of cold & flu season if you get sick occasionally, and throughout the cold & flu season if you get sick regularly.  If you’re feeling run down, taking numerous flights, or otherwise at risk, I recommend taking it for an additional week or two around that time.  Tablets should be taken twice a day, 5 tablets each dose.  Granules should be taken twice a day, and depending on need, either 1 or 2 teaspoons each dose.

2. Lonicera & Forsythia Formula (Yin Qiao San)

Overview:  TCM offers dozens of herbal formulas to take in the early stage of a cold or flu, and many others to manage the symptoms if a cold or flu fully takes root.  I recommend bypassing that complexity and keeping a modified form of Yin Qiao San on hand.  Time is of the essence, and the sooner you take this formula after you experience the first symptoms of cough, sore or scratchy throat, chills or body flush, body aches or congestion, the more likely it will work to fight off the illness.  From a TCM perspective, the formula releases the exterior, clears wind-heat and reduces toxicity.  From a biomedical perspective, this formula has anti-viral, anti-bacterial and diaphoretic properties.

Form:  Though the granules offer a stronger, less expensive dose, I generally recommend taking this in tablet form, so that the first dose can be taken as soon as the first symptoms show.  Tablets should be kept in your car, purse, and/or desk drawer at work, to make sure they are easily and quickly accessible.  If you happen to see me in that very early stage, let me know and I can prepare an herbal granule formula that will be modified to more specifically address your specific symptoms.  Otherwise, the tablet form I recommend is a product by Health Concerns called Cold Away, which is Yin Qiao San with the addition of other anti-viral and bacterial herbs such as da qing ye and ban lan gen.

Instructions/Dosage:  For Cold Away tablets, take 5 tablets four times a day, about every four hours.  For granules, take 1 teaspoon four times a day.   Take either form for 3 days at the most, or until symptoms have been absent for 24 hours.

Harmattan season??..How can you stay fresh!!.Health blog is here ..

It’s official harmattan is here! While it is possible to enjoy the cool weather there is no denying that it comes with load of challenges. Harmattan is a dry, cold and dusty period characterized by low humidity in the atmosphere compared to other seasons of the year.

The harshness in the air can have dire effects on our health particularly on the hair and skin, as it is the root cause of skin dryness, cracking lips, hair breakage and general allergies.

To be on the safe side, it is important to take some extra measures to help combat the harsh effects of the weather. Here are some tips on how to maintain your hair and skin in the best possible ways through this season.

Use moisturizers

One of the best ways to maintain your skin and hair this season is by keeping it moisturized and fresh at all times. Dry skin is the root cause of all skin problems including breakage, aging and peeling among others.  To avoid dryness and maintain your body oil, it is advisable to use mild moisturizing soaps and oily lotions instead of the normal lotion.

You can also add a few drops of oil to your bathing water for a more soothing appeal.

Taking care of hair this season can be twice as frustrating especially for people keeping natural hair. Dry scalps and hair lead to not just dandruff but breakage.  Always ensure your hair is well oiled with a moisturizing hair cream mixed with natural oils such as coconut oil, olive oil and shea-butter to prevent flaking and split ends.

Exposure to the sun

Another way to maintain healthy skin is by avoiding unnecessary exposure of the skin to dry air and also to keep your scalp and hair from dryness. If you value the health of your hair, protecting your strands with SPF is an absolute must. Without it, your hair remains vulnerable to colour fade, serious dryness, dehydration and dust.

To avoid dust clogged hair pores which hampers growth, always cover your hair.

Note: Scarves, hats and other hair accessories are your hair’s best friends this season. They offer protection for your hair and are very fashionable too.

After baths, use lotion while the skin is damp

Do not towel your body completely dry after bathing. Applying cream/oil on damp skin helps to retain about 10% moisture and your skin will definitely thank you for this. Also remember to use hand cream during the day and before going to bed at night.

Combing wet hair is a no-no

Your hair is at its most fragile when wet, which is why brushing or combing just after the shower is a major no-no. If your hair seems to get frizzy and fall flat just minutes after blow-drying, then it’s very likely that you simply aren’t drying it properly.

Your hair has to be dried completely before combing. Brushing wet hair only breaks it the more. Be sure there is no leftover moisture before you comb and moisturize.

Avoid alcohol based facial cleaners

Alcohol or astringent cleanser are a no go area this season hence the ambiance is already dry. Instead, make use of mild cleansers and toners with a neutral pH of 5.5. Don’t forget to always moisturize after cleansing.

Use lip balm/ gloss

It is common knowledge that this is a season for cracked and scaly lips. Dry, cracked lips are gross and unattractive so why not invest in a good lip balm, lip salve or lip gloss. Give your matte lippies a break and opt for moisturizing lipsticks instead. Or simply apply lip balm/gloss before or after your lipstick.

Style properly

Wear your hair in protective styles to protect your ends from drying and breaking off.  Also avoid use of hair gels, spritz and strong hair hold. Hair sprays and styling mousse may be used instead.

Healthy eating facts to make up healthy children.

Do your children know where their food comes from? Do they know the names of healthy fruits and vegetables?

A great way to get them excited to eat nutritious food is give them healthy role models and help them take ownership of their food. I was just sent a great children's book for review, Green is Good, which is written by a mother/daughter duo. The little girl, Liv, is a great role model for kids, as she shares all the veggies she loves and how she is trying to teach her dog, Bowie, to love different veggies. She discovers that the best way to grow her favorite veggies is organically. This book is not only a fun read for the kids, it also opens up a dialogue between young children and their parents on modern living, farming, healthy eating and organic food.

Author and mother Elizabeth Gorcey has been creating her entire life - with paint, film (starred in Footloose, Teen Wolf, Max Headroom), and words. Her new book series is inspired by her daughter, Olivia, who as a three-year-old, began to spontaneously deliver wisdom and advice to anyone who was listening. Elizabeth dubbed her daughters musings as "Liv-Isms" and each book in the series is based on these everyday insights. Sometimes kids are the best teachers, and in encouraging her own daughter to embrace and use her authentic voice, Elizabeth realized how much adults can, and must, learn from the purity and honesty of a child's perspective. Pretty cute, right? I can definitely relate, since my four children teach me important lessons daily.

My kids were so excited to see another child doing what they love to do - grow and eat healthy food! In the world of kids, I find way too often that people treat them as little garbage cans - stuffing them full of junk food and whatever they think will make them smile. Artificial junk food is NOT healthy for their wonderful growing bodies. It is time we start making a difference in our children's lives.

Good Health matters with coconut..Yes or no?? Come in!!

Coconut is a mature fruit of the cocos nucifera palm. It is one of very versatile and indispensable food item for millions of inhabitants in South and South-East Asia, and Pacific islands. It is one of the most sought-after ingredients in the kitchen since it employed in almost each and every recipe prepared in these parts of the world.

Cocos nucifera belongs to the large Palmaceae family of palm trees. Coco palm grows well under tropical climates. The palm requires moist, sandy, well-drained soil and flourishes well all along the saline-rich coastal regions.

Health benefits of coconut
Coconut is a very versatile and indispensable food item for most people under the tropical belt. It is a complete food rich in calories, vitamins, and minerals. A medium-size nut carrying 400 g edible meat and some 30-150 ml of water may provide almost all the daily-required essential minerals, vitamins, and energy of an average-sized individual.

100 g kernel consists of 354 calories. Much of this comes from the fats and protein. Although, its meat is disproportionately high in saturated fats on comparison to other common edible nuts, coconut has many bioactive compounds that are essential for better health.

The important saturated fatty acid in the coconut is lauric acid (1:12 carbon fatty acid). Lauric acid increases good-HDL cholesterol levels in the blood. HDL is a high-density lipoprotein, which has beneficial effects on the coronary arteries by preventing vessel blockade (atherosclerosis). Physicians recommend high HDL to total cholesterol levels in the blood for the same reason.

Coconut water is a very refreshing drink to beat tropical summer thirst. The juice is packed with simple sugar, electrolytes, minerals, and bioactive compounds such as cytokinin, and enzymes such as acid phosphatase, catalase, dehydrogenase, peroxidase, polymerases, etc. Altogether, these enzymes aid in digestion and metabolism.

Coconut oil extracted from dry kernel (copra) is an excellent emollient agent. It is used in cooking, applied over scalp as hair nourishment, employed in pharmacy and in medicines.

Research studies suggest that cytokinins (e.g., kinetin and trans-zeatin) in coconut water showed significant anti-ageing, anti-carcinogenic, and anti-thrombotic effects.

The kernel is an excellent source of minerals such as copper, calcium, iron, manganese, magnesium, and zinc.

It is also a very good source of B-complex vitamins such as folates, riboflavin, niacin, thiamin, and pyridoxine. These vitamins are essential in the sense that body requires them from external sources to replenish.

Coconut meat and water contain a very good amount of potassium. 100 g of fresh meat contains 356 mg% or 7.5% of daily required levels of potassium.

Moringa and its nutritional contents..Should be added to your diet!!

Best Ever...

If you are not familiar with Moringa, now is the time to get familiar. This awesome plant tops my list of healthy foods right up there with Kale, Turmeric, and Acai.

Moringa (Moringa oleifera) has been eaten for centuries, and it is no wonder why. It contains 46 antioxidants, abundant minerals and minerals. It also offers more vitamin A than carrots, more potassium than bananas, more calcium and protein than milk, more fiber than oats and more iron than spinach.

With a green tea-like taste, moringa supports healthy heart function, liver function, energy levels, anti-aging antioxidants, and overall immune system. One of the brands bringing the plant to U.S shelves is ORGANIC INDIA— the first global brand to distribute organic moringa powder and capsules to the natural category’s nationwide shelves in 2013 and moringa tulsi tea in 2014.

I personally LOVE the Moringa Tulsi Tea. I am currently drinking 3 cups of it a day. My naturopathic doctor recommended having me drink Tulsi tea for combating stress. So for me to find Tulsi combined with Moringa makes this tea my absolute favorite right now. The taste is so mild and it is caffeine free, so I drink plenty of it.

Tea is so soothing and relaxing anyway, but with the power of Moringa and Tulsi in your mug, you will be stress-busting and giving your body great nutrition all in a cup of tea.

10 Good Nutritional values of cucumber for pure good health

If you'd like to make your diet healthier by adding more vegetables to your meals, cucumbers are a great choice. Cucumbers are widely used in traditional diets as  well as spas across the world for a reason: They are good for health.
In this research paper alone, cucumbers are said to have the following benefits: potential antidiabetic, antioxidant activity, cleansing action of toxins and waste, soothing effect against skin irritation, and prevention of constipation. And here are 10 health benefits of cucumbers in more details.
1. Help you stay hydrated
Cucumbers are 95.2 percent water, which means that a 5-ounce serving contains 4.8 ounces or 150 ml water. That's already about 26 percent of your daily water intake through food.
2. Support heart health
Cucumbers contain potassium (152mg per cup), which can help lower blood pressure. A review of the best studies conducted on potassium intake showed that a higher intake "is associated with lower rates of stroke and might also reduce the risk of total cardiovascular disease."
As less than 2 percent of U.S. adults consume the recommended 4,700 mg potassium per day, eating cucumbers is an easy way to start increasing your potassium consumption.
3. Protect your brain from neurological diseases
An anti-inflammatory substance called fisetin is present in cucumbers, as well as strawberries and grapes.
It has recently been suggested that fisetin plays an important role in brain health: It would have "the ability to reduce the impact of age-related neurological diseases on brain function," and it would also help maintain cognitive function in people with Alzheimer's disease.
4. Protect your skin against the effects of aging
There is a reason why cucumbers are used in skin care: They have been shown to be effective as a potential anti-wrinkle agent in cosmetic products, protecting our skin form the effects of aging.
5. Fight inflammation in the body and reduce the risk of cancer
Cucumbers can help lower the inflammatory response in the body. They contain polyphenols called lignans, which can potentially reduce the risk of certain cancers and cardiovascular diseases.
They also contain plant nutrients called cucurbitacins, which have anti-cancer properties: "Scientists have already determined that several different signaling pathways required for cancer cell development and survival can be blocked by activity of cucurbitacins."
6. Relieve pain
Flavonoids, which are anti-inflammatory substances, and tannins in cucumbers have both been shown to limit the release of free radicals in the body and to reduce pain.
As explained in the Journal of Young Pharmacists, "traditionally, this plant is used for headaches; the seeds are cooling and diuretic, the fruit juice is used as a nutritive and as a demulcent in anti-acne lotions."
7. Reduce bad breath
Bad breath is usually caused by bacteria in the mouth. Fiber and water-rich vegetables like cucumbers can boost your mouth's saliva production, which in turn helps wash away the bacteria that cause the odor in the mouth.
8. Protect your bones
Cucumber are a good source of vitamin K: One cup contains 22 percent of the recommended daily intake of vitamin K. This vitamin is essential for bone health, as low vitamin K intakes have been associated with a higher risk for bone fracture. Vitamin K is also important for improving calcium absorption in the bones.
9. Prevent constipation
Cucumbers are rich in water, and their skin contains insoluble fiber. Both water and fiber help food to move through the digestive tract quicker and more easily, helping prevent constipation.
10. Maintain a healthy weight
Cucumbers are very low in calories (16 calories per cup) and they also contain fiber in the skin. And foods that contain fiber can help maintain a healthy weight.
There are many ways you can enjoy cucumbers: raw in salads as a side with your meals, fermented as a pickle, or in vegetable juices. Choose organic over conventionally grown cucumbers, as cucumbers wer

Increase Your Collagen Levels to discover Healthier and Firmer Skin

Do you want the softer yet firmer skin you had when you were younger? Forget about surgery or injections because now you can restore your youthful glow with special skin care creams and lotions. Discover what to look for here.

Now I am sure that you, like me, have tried what seems like every cream that promises firmer skin available!  The mainstream brands just never seem to live up to the hype, despite the promises they make.

Basically the problem lies in the fact that they often contain tiny amounts of any useful ingredient in order to maximize their profits. What they also contain are too many harsh additives like mineral oil that dry your skin out with regular use.

There is also a common misconception that putting collagen in a cream will work. This actually has no effect as it is not absorbed into your skin.

The latest cutting-edge firming creams contain special ingredients that stimulate your body to make more collagen. This results in softer and much younger looking skin as any wrinkles and lines gradually fade away.

Now while these are not miracle overnight solutions, you should see results within 4-6 weeks as your skin firms up.

The best ingredients are Function keratin, Wakame kelp and Coenzyme Q10.

As well as increasing your collagen levels for firmer skin, they also provide powerful antioxidants and essential nutrients to keep it that way. This helps to prevent the aging signs from returning and keeps your skin in optimal health.

It is also true that these types of firming creams actually enhance your overall health by improving your circulation and boosting your immune system as they contain natural potent extracts and no harmful additives.

You might also want to consider premium fish oil supplements too as these are fantastic for your overall health and your skin.

They contain added antioxidants like lycopene (from tomato oil) that reverse the effects of aging and treat sun damaged skin too (photo-aging). In studies, they were able to increase skin firmness by 10% and moisturize from the inside out.

If you simply stick to natural proven ingredients like these in your skin care regime, you will soon be able to achieve firmer skin and the return of your youthful glow as your collagen levels start to rise.

Important Factors To Look For in Energy Boosting Herb Supplements

Are you frustrated by the sheer amount of information out there regarding energy boost herbs? It's not surprising that this multi-million dollar market will have its fair share of poor quality products, so here are some tips to ensure you get the very best available.

For a start, look for only natural ingredients. Olive leaf and ginkgo biloba are both reputed for their energy boosting powers and when combined they produce an even greater boost, showing the virtues of an expert synergistic blend.

Synergy is where you get the benefits of each individual nutrient and the benefits from their interaction with each other, and many of the energy boost herbs combine well together.

With regards to olive leaf, many professional athletes take it to increase their energy and endurance before a big game, showing the power these natural extracts can have. In addition, they are good for you, building up your immune system unlike many of the synthetic energy boosters which actually impair your immune system.

Heart Attacks Can totally be reduced by Magnesium!

Not many persons are conscious of exactly how important magnesium is for general health. Right after oxygen, water, and fundamental nutrition, magnesium could be the most significant component required by the human body, initiating more than 300 distinct biochemical responses essential for the body to operate appropriately. The U.S. lowest RDA for the mineral magnesium is around 320 mg each day for females and above 400 mg each day for males, even though the best possible regular quantities are nearer to 500 to 700 mg each day - however research has shown that many people frequently consume about 50 % of that and also that 8 from 10 folks don't take sufficient each day magnesium for only the lowest day-to-day quantities advised. Recently available investigation has discovered that this particular deficiency of magnesium could put the heart - and the overall health - in major danger.
Magnesium defends from cardiovascular disease and cardiac arrest, high blood pressure levels and heart stroke, type II diabetes and far, far more. It is actually more essential as compared to calcium, potassium or sodium and manages all 3 of these. As opposed to well-known myths, it is the mineral magnesium which is in fact most essential in establishing robust bones and protecting against bone damage.
Magnesium is a muscle relaxer, when calcium is actually a muscle constrictor. Reduced magnesium consumption is related to muscle spasm, tremors and convulsions. Most people in America, especially females, are already recommended to take 1200-1500 mg of calcium every day. Practically none of those women have recently been informed that calcium mineral in individual dosages which go beyond 500 mg are not assimilated and they really need one more 400-600 mg of additional calcium because their own diet plan definitely supplies about 800 mg in this nutrient. Given that 99 % of magnesium exists within living tissues, blood serum ranges are certainly not a great pointer of magnesium insufficiency. Blood checks for magnesium usually are infamously incorrect. Only 1 % from the overall body magnesium share is available beyond the borders of living cells. So blood serum ranges are infamously incorrect. To put it differently, your physician can't very easily inform you from a blood test if the magnesium ranges are reduced.
Many Americans, 8 from 10, don't take in sufficient magnesium. The nations which have a very high death rate on the planet would be the Scandinavian nations and New Zealand exactly where much more calcium is eaten from milk products, while to compare and contrast, the minimum death rates on the planet are in Portugal and also Japan exactly where calcium-rich milk products aren't taken frequently. Americans take in around 800 mg of calcium each day (milk consumers could get 1200-1500 mgs off their diet regime only), however just take in about 275 mg of magnesium mineral. Hence the prominence of calcium over magnesium generates the signs of muscle spasm.
Migraine headaches, eyelid twitch, heart flutters, back pains, premenstrual anxiety, leg cramping and bowel problems are virtually all associated with calcium excess. Too much calcium could also lead to renal system stones (1 from 11 Americans) and also heart valve calcifications (mitral valve). An important fraction of American grown ups take in above 2000 mg of every day calcium, the stage where negative effects of overdosage continue to be noted.

Not that Good bladder? Tendencies in getting a good bladder for Healthy living.

Healthy bladders are often compromised by extended sitting and poor bathroom facilities (in both quality and quantity)—both common aspects in our nation’s schools and workplaces. These conditions often account for the retraining of the bladder to store a larger volume of urine than is medically recommended. This can cause a sluggish bladder, which results in the urge to empty the bladder again in a relatively short amount of time.

The bladder is simply a reservoir for urine and not designed to store copious amounts of urine. The brain signals the urge response when a pre-set amount, which varies per individual, is stored. A good rule of thumb is to comfortably wait to empty the bladder every couple of hours.

Many individuals, especially women, have a tendency to ignore this urge and will wait to urinate when their bladder is two or three times larger than the recommended volume.

The regular flushing of the bladder serves to discourage bacterial growth, while maintaining proper bladder size and elasticity. An overstretched bladder is not going to recoil as effectively (think of an overused rubber band) and eventually will become sluggish. For sluggish bladders, the better bladder techniques may provide some relief. This includes:

It all Starts with a Flush

Better bladder health begins with drinking lots of water to help dilute the urine and regularly flush the bladder. The goal is to reach eight glasses per day. If you do not like the taste of water, try adding the juice of a fresh lemon or orange.

Pelvic Floor Training

Strengthening the bladder muscle provides optimal storage and emptying capacities and encourages a healthy bladder. This is best achieved by Kegel exercises. Contract the pelvic floor muscles and hold for a ten-second count and relax. It is recommended that you perform ten repetitions every hour.

Walk and Squat

Better bladder health is greatly improved with the addition of this pelvic-floor strengthening exercise. The goal is to reach thirty walk and squats per day. To do a walk and squat: walk five steps, stop and squat. Hold for a five-second count and relax. Do not do all thirty at the same time—instead, perform a set of five walk and squats at a time, until you reach a total of six cycles per day.

Empty, Wait, Empty

Better bladder health includes completely emptying the bladder, otherwise the urge to go will return fifteen minutes later (however, it is normal to have a small residual of approximately 1.5 oz). Pregnancy and age can lead to bladder relaxation and result in the incomplete emptying of the bladder. Do not try to combat this by forcing urine out of the bladder, as the pressure actually causes more problems. Instead, try and relax the pelvic floor by taking several slow deep breaths. After urination, continue sitting and wait a minute and then try to urinate again to empty the rest of the bladder.

By following these recommendations, better bladder health can easily be achieved in a few short weeks. If you are suffering from a medically-related bladder disorder or take prescription medication that affects bladder emptying, be sure to consult your physician before attempting this program.

Money Can't buy you Good health. Its in You! #Come in..

Donna Dubinsky writes:
This isn't the story of a poor family with a mother who has a dreadful disease that bankrupts them, or a child who has to go without vital medicines. Unlike many others, my family can afford medical care, with or without insurance.
Instead, this is a story about how broken the market for health insurance is, even for those who are healthy and are willing and able to pay for it.

Co-founder of Palm, Inc and Handspring, Ms Dubinsky has been called "one of the most important businesswomen in the United States" for her pioneering work in the development and strategic marketing of handheld computing devices.

Note: Six Importance of Good Health Care

Quality: The balance of health benefits and harm is the essential core of a definition of quality.
Avedis Donabedian
In 2002, the Institute of Medicine published Crossing the Quality Chasm, an influential book that framed all future discussions of quality health care. Crossing came on the heels of the IOM publication To Err Is Human (2000) and a Journal of the American Medical Association report (1998) that warned of "serious and widespread quality problems...throughout American medicine." The report called attention to three broad categories of quality defects:
underuse, whereby scientifically practices are not used as often as they should be;
overuse, especially of imaging procedures and prescription of antibiotics; and
misuse, when a proper procedure is not administered correctly (such as prescribing the wrong drug)
To Err Is Human estimated that as many as 98,000 people dies each year in hospitals from injuries or illness contracted during care.

In Crossing, the IOM outlined six specific aims (explained by Dr. Donald Berwick in the video above) that a health care system system must fulfill to deliver quality care:
Safe: Care should be as safe for patients in health care facilities as in their homes;
Effective: The science and evidence behind health care should be applied and serve as the standard in the delivery of care;
Efficient: Care and service should be cost effective, and waste should be removed from the system;
Timely: Patients should experience no waits or delays in receiving care and service;
Patient centered: The system of care should revolve around the patient, respect patient preferences, and put the patient in control;
Equitable: Unequal treatment should be a fact of the past; disparities in care should be eradicated.
Recognizing that aims must be accompanied by observable metrics, the IOM defined sets of measurements for each aim. For example:
Safe: Overall mortality rates or the percentage of patients receiving safe care;
Effective: How well evidenced-based practices are followed, such as the percentage of time diabetic patients receive all recommended care at each visit;
Efficient: Analysis of the costs of care by patient, provider, organization, and community;
Timely: Waits and delays in receiving care, service, or results;
Patient centered: Patient and family satisfaction;
Equitable: Differences in quality measures by race, gender, income, and other population-based demographic and socioeconomic factors.
Of course, this is all easier said than done. Hospitals could more easily follow evidence-based practices were there a national outcomes data base that provided population-based information. Effecting efficiency programs can mean a complete redesign of institutional culture, as in Virginia Mason's (Seattle) 20-year commitment to Lean management principles. Equitable care is unlikely without a sea change in national health policy (not that there is one) that extends well beyond the limitations of the Affordable Care Act.

The most encouraging developments in the industry-wide reassessment of quality are the recognition that safety and efficiency need not be mutually exclusive, an increased capacity for the practice of evidence-based medicine, and a new emphasis on patients when it comes to setting goals and measuring results.
